The Artwork of Stephen W Schwake
Confirmation.
I've recently had two conversations with fellow Austin artists who are UT alumni like myself. All three of us attended the College of Fine Arts around the same time. It turns out I'm not the only one who noticed that:

1. The painting department in the mid to late 90's held an utter contempt for anything figurative, illustrative, or illusionistic, unless it was justified with layers of post-conceptualism and described with whatever post-modern catchphrase the professor had recently read in Artforum.

2. The institutionalization of multiculturalism had finally started to settle into art academia, so identity-political art was the order of the day. Unfortunately, I happen to be a straight white guy, so any art I made that had to do with my gender, heritage, and sexual preference was immediately branded as sexist, racist, and homophobic by fellow students and many of my professors.

3. The printmaking department was the only floor of the entire art building that actually fostered the development of technique and a high level of craftsmanship.

4. Many art professors took offense to the notion that not everyone wanted to go on to grad school and get an MFA, possibly because it was a different path than the one they chose.

It was also inspiring to find that I'm not the only one who is working and making a living as an artist in a town that doesn't place a high value on visual art in comparison to other similar cites, and that I'm doing it with "merely" a BFA.
