The Artwork of Stephen W Schwake
The Jigsaw Puzzle Project
2009
In spring, 2007, I organized a group art piece, The Jigsaw Puzzle Project. I constructed a giant jigsaw from a 4' x 8' sheet of birch plywood. I distributed the pieces to 32 different artists for a low entry fee of five dollars. The artists had two months to turn their pieces into art.

I used the entry fee money to cover the costs of materials. The rest of the money was used to buy a keg of my favorite locally-brewed beer. I hosted an "Assembly Party". Despite a freakish ice storm, over 70 people and all but one of the artists came out to see the puzzle put together. The assembly process itself was almost as interesting as the finished piece. The attendees cheered after every piece was put in place, and a sense of anticipation built as it all came together.

The completed puzzle was displayed as part of the Fuse Box Festival, and served as a backdrop for a live performance by Foot Patrol

It was also included in "DIY From ATX", an exhibit of Austin artists I curated at Gilrose Studios in Wichita Falls, TX.
